When we turn away homeless families, we are turning away our neighbors. The homeless population is no longer just the unfortunate man or woman who stands on the corner asking for money or food. Our homeless population is quickly becoming our neighbors (adults with children). Any one of us could be in this situation in a heartbeat.
Commission on Homelessness and its intention to formulate a plan to “end chronic homelessness” … through the federal initiative to end chronic homelessness in 10 years. The goal is worthwhile, of course, but the devil is in the details. By federal definition, a chronically homeless person is “an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling condition who has either been continuously homeless for a year or more, or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.” What the definition excludes, in short, are the fastest-growing segments of our local homeless population.
Today’s public schools have forfeited their right to exist. Let’s get rid of them. Let’s do it carefully and humanely, but let’s do it. Let’s offer every child a choice
